he purpose of our History Page is to remember those people,
who in action, minds, hearts, hands and muscles, worked for God in our local
church.
May God Bless You, as you read. May you remember those times and those people. Some of which have already gone on to be with the Lord. We are a soul-saving station.... yes, indeed.
"Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature."
This was the Great Commission Jesus, gave to the church, before acending into heaven.
The first meeting of what
is now our local church, came July 1968. After much
prayer, and work, two sisters, Marie Smith Lawrence,
evangelist, and Betty Smith Whitman;
who was member at Hackleburg
Church of God of Prophecy, started out on a quest, to start a
church in Haleyville. They went door to door in their community, and conducted prayer
meetings, and home visitations. They spoke to District Overseer, Bishop Teddy Abrue. He gave them spiritual
advice, and the help they needed. The ladies parents, Clyde
and Nettie Smith,
loaned a small rented house. And, held the first meeting, of what is now the Haleyville Church of God of Prophecy.
After this revival, the Mission moved to the Haleyville Community Center. When
not in use, the services were held here. The Trailblazers,
kept the interest going. Who were the TrailBlazers?? Betty Whitman, Carolyn Smith, Cecil Smith, and
later Bobby Whitman.
The Mission, stayed at the Rec. Center, until one meeting, inspired by
the Holy Ghost, Bro. Cecil Smith, said,
"I believe I can beat this." God blessed this Mission,
and he rented a storebuilding from his cousin. and they moved the Mission
meetings there. It continued to grow, and prosper. Attendance grew and grew;
and finally, on February 11, 1973, ....The
Haleyville Church of God of Prophecy,
was established!!!
This
"new" Church continued to grow, and prosper. Attendance was growing, and
people began to seek after God, like never before. The members continued to follow
the Guidance of the Lord. On August
1, 1978, this blessed church, bought its first property, on Hwy.
129. God began to really work in the lives of each of the people. The
Church stayed in this small building for several years, and many came to know the Lord,
there. Through the teaching, and ministering, thereof, membership increased, and
more visitors attending. With so many souls attending now, a problem with overcrowdedness,
arose. A conference was called, and a discussion of buying new property was brought
up. This proposed property, off Hwy 195, on
Pounders-Sims Road, was a better location, and much bigger plot of land. A
perfect place to build a larger church building. Through a
unanmious vote, the members decided to purchase this land. And, on November 21, 1984, work began. Praise the
Lord!!!
This
new building was larger, more efficiant, and productive for this growing church
family. A basement was dug, and sunday school rooms built. Finally, in July 1989, the Present-day Church building was
completed, and finally could move into the new "Home".
